{Wedding Eras} 1980's. BIGGER IS BETTER

We have come to the last era that we will be covering on our journey through wedding trends. The 1990's and early 2000 is really a circular movement of fashion trends. Most every trend that was exhibited in the early 1900's revisits in these centuries, which leads us to ending at the 1980's. But.. what an ending we have!

Trends such as shoulder pads, teased hair, parachute pants, acid washed jeans, leg warmers, and slip petticoat dresses blew the 1980's up into an excess. Fashion was about making your attire bigger, louder and full of aerosol hairspray. (who can't love it?)

Celebrities were large influences, especially since MTV and music videos really came to their own during this decade. Welcome Madonna, Michael Jackson, Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, really.. we could go forever!

What influenced weddings the most? It's an easy one. Princess Diana and Charles's wedding. The wedding of the century that have everyone talking about and emulating. Who doesn't want to arrive to their wedding in a glass coach? Moi, naturally.

Princess Diana's dress was amazing.  A puff sleeved dress made of silk taffeta adorned with hand embroidery, sequins, and lace. Not done yet... and 10,000 pearls. Oh wait, and a 25 foot train. Hello heavy! This dress undoubtedly verified that the 1980's had a trend of "excess".

{Wedding Eras} 1970's. The Traveler/Disco Bride

Welcome to the 1970's. As we have been traveling through the decades of wedding eras, we have landed on a decade that many can remember as their own special decade.

Fashion moved in many different directions, from the maxi dress one day to the mini skirt the other, fashion trends became broader. Women focused on their "own fashion personality". Influences from other ethnic cultures became more apparent in US fashion as travel was made easier and new fashion trends were brought back into the States. It was the age of the hippie and the disco ball. Bell bottoms, caftans, platform shoes, and peasant dresses were popular trends at the time (you'd like to forget those... wouldn't you? ?) and translate right into the bridal market.

Bridal fashion was romantic with lace accents and almost medieval influences. Dust ruffles along the edges of gowns and lace bibs were popular elements of wedding gowns. Towards the end of the decade wedding gowns became more fluid as stretch polyester fabric became popular.

True to form, here is a real 1970's wedding from me (Katey, Blog-extraordinaire for MEG Jewelry) of my lovely parents wedding! And let's not for get the men's colored tuxedos....

A new segment following Meg on her travels to bridal boutiques, Trunk Shows, will give you the latest information of where to find Meg with the latest MEG Jewelry!

For those who are pondering what a trunk show really is, here is the basic information you'll need, in definition term. Meg travels to a bridal boutique with her jewelry ("in a trunk").

Bridal boutiques that carry MEG Jewelry may not have all her pieces. A trunk show allows you to try on earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and hair jewelry that may not be kept in stock at the current boutique. You'll want to have your wedding gown handy to find the perfect match of jewelry. You can bring your gown with you, or inform your bridal boutique that you'll be stopping in during the trunk show.

Then the fun begins-finding the best choice of accessories for your ensemble with Meg! Also, bring along your MOB and Bridesmaids, we have wonderful pieces for their gowns as well. After you decide on your selections, you normally place an order with Meg or the boutique that will arrive before your wedding day. That's the gist! You now know what to expect at a trunk show.

Fashion turns to futurism, space age, and architecture influences. Famous fashion designers such as Givenchy, Christian Dior, Balenciaga, Yves St. Laurent, and Pierre Cardin appear on the radar. It's just the beginning of high fashion.

We see famous silhouettes such as the sleeveless sheath dress designed by Oleg Casseni for Jackie Kennedy Onassis and the mini skirt turn into fashion trends. These trends significantly reflect in bridal fashion as we have seen in the previous decades. Celebrities had a big influence on fashion and as you can see from Elvis and Priscilla's wedding, the sheath wedding gown was popular!
